IFRS 18 is effective for annual reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, with earlier application permitted if disclosed. Application is retrospective: comparatives are restated, and entities provide specified reconciliations between the IAS 1 presentation and the IFRS 18 presentation for the comparative period.
For a calendar-year reporter, the comparative year began on 1 January 2026 and is already running. That is why ledger tagging and category mapping cannot wait until late 2026.
What changes on the face of the statements
- Entities that invest in assets or provide finance to customers as a main business activity classify specified items differently from a general industrial entity.
- Foreign exchange differences follow the item that generated them.
- Share of profit of associates and joint ventures sits outside operating profit in the general model.
- Unusual income and expenses are disclosed with the line item in which each amount is included.
- Operating profit is a residual — not a free-form management label.
- Catch-all “other income / other expenses” captions are constrained by aggregation and labelling rules.
Profit before tax and profit after tax amounts do not change solely because of IFRS 18.
Transition and interim reporting
- Restate comparatives and present the required reconciliation from the IAS 1 line structure.
- In the first year of application, MPM disclosures are required in condensed interim financial statements, not only in the annual report (via consequential amendments affecting IAS 34).
- Each MPM reconciles to the most directly comparable IFRS-specified subtotal.
- The assessment of main business activity is applied prospectively in the manner set out in the Standard’s transition guidance.
- Indian first-time Ind AS reporters that sit inside an IFRS 18 group should plan group reporting packs on the IFRS 18 basis from day one of the group’s adoption.

| MPM note | Inventory public measures; draft reconciliations and tax / NCI effects |
| Comparatives | Capture 2026 data with IFRS 18 tags — avoid a year-end rebuild |
| Covenants and KPIs | Engage lenders and remuneration committees early |
| Interims | Build MPM note processes into the 2027 quarterly close |
